I am relatively new to using Twitter, but what seems to be a good strategy thus far is to not follow everyone that follows you. Keep your "follows" to people that fit within your target audience and joint venture partners, otherwise you will have to spend far too much time looking for the tweets of value in between the numerous tweets that are useless.

If other people want to follow you, great, but I think that some people follow you hoping that you will follow them. From some of the profiles that I have seen, it seems that there are a number of members that simply have a goal to gather as many followers as possible regardless of their relevance.

With the various social and business networking sites, it can become overwhelming sometimes just to keep up. It doesn't make much sense to clutter up your inbox with message from people that are more concerned with being popular than productive.

I agree some people use it to socialize, and the porn and spammers just don't even get a second of my time.

In the beginning, I would continue to follow the "I'm on my way to starbucks" people, now I'm very picky as too who I continue to follow, and I focus on keeping it business related. It took me a while to figure out my gameplan with the whole twitter world. I'm no expert but I'm trying, so any advice is welcomed.

But these are my thoughts:
It can be a good venue for sharing your products and services, you just have to omit the social twitters. The followers I have now and that I follow are business related and it has opened up doors for me to share my thoughts and ideas. If you use twitter right by offering your followers pertinent information of interest to them, they seem to start interacting with you. I also, never "self-promote" instead I mention things that are new to my company such as promotions or ventures sort of a "news and information tweet". I use wordpress to post my tweets of blogs and articles as well as blog and articles from fellow entrepreneurs, and I try to retweet individuals that I feel have tweeted something of significance. I've also, been retweeting any charities or non-profits to help them get their organizations visible in the community.

Thanks for the comments, look forward to hearing more.

Twitter has potential if only the spammers and porn people would just stay off it. So that's why I don't use it all that much.

I don't mind twitter, but i feel that some people don't know how to use it.
it is a great tool to tell followers about new products or services, if you use it for business.

but on the other hand, i had some people that i was following on business telling me:
* I am on my way to starbucks
* I need to get my dry cleaning
* is a boring day, etc.

for that reason i don't spend that much time on it

Yes definitely. I love the ability to post a link that takes pople directly to your site. What can be better than that?
